Family Therapy
As a comprehensive counseling center, Shoreline offers family therapy and counseling for the residents of the greater New Haven area.
A common goal in family therapy is to create new patterns of interacting and coping within the family system. A family counselor can support each family member's ability to gain greater insight into their own experience and to effectively communicate that experience with each of the other family members so as to deepen mutual understanding, strengthen relationships, and empower each member of the family to provide support, nurturing, encouragement, and healing to the others. Shoreline Groups
Group therapy involves one or more therapists who lead a group of roughly five to 15 patients. Typically, groups meet for an hour or two each week. Some people attend individual therapy in addition to groups, while others participate in groups only.
Many groups are designed to target a specific problem, such as depression, obesity, panic disorder, social anxiety, chronic pain, or substance abuse. Other groups focus more generally on improving social skills, helping people deal with a range of issues such as anger, shyness, loneliness and low self-esteem. Groups often help those who have experienced loss, whether it be a spouse, a child or someone who died by suicide.
Specialty Areas
Several of our therapists at Shoreline Wellness are well trained and experienced in various specialty areas such as EMDR and Selective Mutism.

The programs train participants about how to help children adjust in a healthy way to divorce or living apart from a parent. Qualifying for assistance from Connecticut's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to Connecticut's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
