Each year we grant Top Non-Profit Badges to agencies based on these criteria:
- Consistently accepting clients
- Offering a wide range of services e.g. marriage counseling and child counseling as reported by our users.
- Our users reporting affordable services.
Our aim is to guide our users to agencies most likely to be able to help. In addition to the above criteria we also exercise editorial discretion with our choice based upon our experience. We take our responsibility and objectivity seriously. We don't accept any form of payment from providers for this honor.
William Wendt Center for Loss and Healing
With nationally recognized expertise, the Wendt Center for Loss and Healing is a premier resource for restoring hope and healthy functioning to adults, teens and children who are coping with grief, loss and trauma in the Greater Washington region.
Adult Counseling
Our professional, experienced counselors work with adults, children, teens, and adults individually as families and in support groups. We offer counseling in our main office in Northwest Washington, DC or in our satellite offices in SE and NE Washington.
We offer a variety of services to meet the needs of our community, including individual, couple, family and group counseling. Daytime and evening appointments are available. Every effort is made to find the therapist most suited to the client's needs. As it is difficult to project how long counseling will take, services are available for as long as an individual or a family needs.
Grief and trauma counseling is our specialty. We have learned and benefited from decades of experience working with adults, children, teens and families facing many different situations of illness, trauma and grief. Our therapists are not afraid to witness pain - many of our lives have been touched by it - and we know that we cannot "take it away" or "fix it." But, we can provide a safe, confidential place to travel this often painful journey.
Our standard fee for counseling services is $145.00 per hour. However, we accept insurance and offer a sliding scale (based on household income) to ensure our services are accessible by anyone in need.

Qualifying for assistance from District of Columbia's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to District of Columbia's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
