Services Offered
Family Support
JAFCO is committed to serving the entire family. Treatment interventions, enrichment activities, and family support services are tailored specifically for your family's individual needs related to the care of a child with a developmental disability. Families are seen immediately by our professional staff who will conduct a brief assessment of your family's needs and together we will create an individualized plan for programs and services that may be a support to your child and your family.
Child Enrichment Services
Too often, children with developmental disabilities don't have the opportunity to engage in social and recreational activities with their peers. We recognize how important these activities are in your child's life as a means to learn social and life skills, build self-esteem, make new friends and just have fun.
Your child will be welcome to participate in appropriate enrichment programs such as: - SOCIAL SKILLS GROUPS offering structured activities focused on specific skills, such as social language, appropriate play, and interaction with peers. - LIFE SKILLS PROGRAM, which addresses the skills needed for children to transition into independent adults and includes home management skills (cooking, cleaning, and laundry), money management skills and employment readiness skills. - CREATIVE ARTS AND AFFINITY CLUBS based on your child's interests, and featuring fun activities that promote socialization, communication and motor skills including art, cooking, science, S.T.E.M., fitness, music and movement, and drama.
Respite Services
Many parents of children with developmental disabilities report feelings of isolation as their parenting responsibilities prevent them from engaging in social and recreational activities with family members and friends. Parents and caregivers also need time to relax and renew, for their own self-care and also to be the best parent they can be.
Therapeutic Services
Ongoing therapy is crucial in helping individuals with developmental disabilities to be successful in their daily lives. Continued therapeutic care can encourage the development of functional skills, minimize problem behaviors, and enhance communication and mobility. These services not only transform the life of the child but can transform the dynamic of the entire family. Most insurance providers are accepted for therapeutic services.

Qualifying for assistance from Florida's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to Florida's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
