Atlantic Street Center
Atlantic Street Center is an award-winning agency that has been serving our region for over a century. The specifics of our work have changed and shifted over the years, but the underlying principle remains the same: to support children and families in need throughout our community.
EARLY LEARNING
Our Early Learning program consists of two components: the Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) and our Summer Academy. We are proud to offer both of these programs, which address the needs of many families in our community when it comes to the education of their young children, helping to bridge the early learning achievement gap.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT
Our Youth Development program is designed to lift young people in our communities over those hurdles. We offer after-school tutoring, service learning programs to support the connection youth have to their communities, and a range of leadership, educational, and support groups for youth with specific circumstances and interests.
FAMILY SUPPORT
Our Family Resource Center offers a wide array of classes, programs, and support groups to help our participants develop the skills to best support themselves through these challenges, so they can better support their children. We design our free programs as a means for families to develop self-sufficiency and maintain independence while becoming better parents and providers.
COUNSELING
We have an experienced and diverse team of licensed therapists and committed interns ready and available to help local children, youth, and parents through difficult times. The counseling program uses an evidence-based approach to address issues as diverse as depression, substance abuse, domestic violence, and family conflict. We also offer advocacy and case management services to assist with the legal, financial, and housing issues burdening too many of our families. With our counseling services, we aim to give our participants the mental skills and emotional strength to face their unique challenges without succumbing to injustice.

Qualifying for assistance from Washington's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to Washington's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
