Each year we grant Top Non-Profit Badges to agencies based on these criteria:
- Consistently accepting clients
- Offering a wide range of services e.g. marriage counseling and child counseling as reported by our users.
- Our users reporting affordable services.
Our aim is to guide our users to agencies most likely to be able to help. In addition to the above criteria we also exercise editorial discretion with our choice based upon our experience. We take our responsibility and objectivity seriously. We don't accept any form of payment from providers for this honor.
Center for Mindful Relationships
Center for Mindful Relationships (formerly First Avenue Counseling Centre) is dedicated to providing low-fee counseling services to San Diego families.
Family Therapy - Family relationships can be the most loving, and the most aggravating. We know our family members, and they know us, better than almost anyone. That creates opportunities for wonderful joy as well as occasional deep pain. When those more painful times come, the counselors at Center for Mindful Relationships can help your family be more of a family again. While family therapy is defined more by its methods and subject matter than by who is in the room, family therapy works best when every family member involved in the problem is present. Sometimes we even find it helpful to bring in family members who aren't involved, as they can provide some keen insight into what may be really going on.
Our counselors will discuss with you which family members should be in session, and at which times. Family therapy is typically not a long-term endeavor, with most families seeing improvement within 12 sessions. Some families choose to continue with the therapy experience as a way to strengthen their bonds over longer periods of time. Whatever your needs are, our counselors will work with you and your family to try to meet them.
Couples Counseling (Relationship Counseling) - Romantic relationships are never easy. Our partners see us at our strongest, as well as at our most vulnerable. One of life's greatest challenges can be keeping a relationship together through rough waters. The counselors at Center for Mindful Relationships are trained to help. Problems of trust, power, intimacy, raising children--these are all common in relationships, and counseling can help resolve them. Coming to counseling by itself is a powerful statement. It is a testament to how much you want your relationship to work, and how willing you are to do what it takes to make it happen. An openness to discussing your problems and a commitment to taking action are great first steps to successful couple therapy.
When working with couples, we frequently use co-therapy as a means to balance the session. For example, when seeing a heterosexual couple, we usually will have one male and one female therapist present. This way we ensure everyone will be fully understood, even in experiences truly unique to their gender.
Individual Counseling - Problems in work, relationships and family happen to all of us. The counselors at Center for Mindful Relationships are trained to help.Perhaps you're struggling with decisions about a relationship. Maybe work is not as satisfying to you as you would like it to be. You may be struggling with the loss of a loved one. Whatever you're going through, having a therapist to guide you through it can make the journey a bit easier to handle. While a therapist can not solve your problems for you, he or she can be a caring guide through dark times.
All of our fees are set on a sliding scale based on your income.

Qualifying for assistance from California's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to California's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
