Catholic Charities San Bernardino & Riverside Counties is a highly mission-driven organization dedicated to the alleviation of the suffering and the advancement of the poor and those in crisis in our local communities. Catholic Charities is a non-profit, community based organization incorporated in the State of California in 1980 as a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation. Our Articles of Incorporation state the purpose of the corporation is to engage in social welfare activities in the counties of San Bernardino and Riverside. As a public benefit corporation, Catholic Charities helps all people in our two-county region regardless of religious affiliation. Catholic Charities is also a faith-based organization serving as the Official Social Outreach Ministry of the Diocese of San Bernardino. Though a separate corporation from the Diocese of San Bernardino, Catholic Charities is rooted in the religious and historic traditions of service in the larger community. By virtue of our name and values, Catholic Charities is a visible and active Catholic presence in the community acting on behalf of the Bishop and the people of the Diocese of San Bernardino. Catholic Charities serves all persons in need without regard for religious affiliation. In partnership with individuals, families and communities, we advocate for their needs and support their right to self-determination.

Services Offered
Family Services - Catholic Charities provides critically necessary help for adults, children, and seniors when they are in their darkest hours. The vast majority of the families we serve are poor and low-income families who are barely just getting by each month with their own resources. Then they are confronted by a foreseen crisis that disrupts the already precariousness of their lives. The events that can take a family from relative stability to complete uncertainty often occurs in rapid and unpredictable ways. For low-income families-a sudden event or loss sets off a domino effect of circumstances that can quickly lead to a crisis. Job loss, a decrease in scheduled hours at work, a car that must be repaired, an unexpected illness or hospital visit, or even a death in the immediate family can be the catalyst that destabilizes an already fragile reality. The families that come to us have nowhere else to turn for help. Catholic Charities is there to do whatever may be possible to help these families regain stability and move forward with their lives. Their difficulties are often complicated, and they simply do not have the resources to solve their problems without support from the community. Catholic Charities views those we help as possessing tremendous strengths and potential. Like all of us, they have hopes and dreams for a better life for themselves and their children. However, these families-especially those at the lowest end of the income scale, often face massive institutional, economic, environmental, and social barriers. Many are struggling to address multiple problems simultaneously.
Counseling Services - Therapists and group facilitators provide a range of crisis-based and preventative counseling services to promote safe, healthy and stable families. Areas of expertise include child abuse prevention and intervention, family counseling, school counseling services, trauma counseling for youth, parent education, anger management, and domestic violence support services. Counseling staff are master's degree level therapists under the supervision of a licensed professional. Additionally, facilitators provide intensive training program for residents in our local communities interested in para-professional skills to assist them in their human service volunteer activities.

Qualifying for assistance from California's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to California's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
