The SCH Counseling Center is an innovative, community-based program which offers a full array of mental health services to MediCal eligible children and young adults aged two to 21. Our services promote mental health wellness, recovery, and safety and help clients develop the skills and abilities necessary to be successful. We are a non-profit organization.

The Counseling Center's client and family-centered approach provides lasting support while fostering independence. Our team collaborates with clients and their families to identify strengths and address needs and is committed to respecting each client's culture, values, and creativity.
Counseling Services
- Individual therapy for a variety of mental health issues, including specialized services for youth transitioning to adulthood and youth who have experienced trauma (Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) for children aged two to seven and their caregivers - Parenting support and family therapy - Child and Family Team meetings - Wellness Recovery Action Plans (WRAP) to increase positive coping skills and develop resiliency - On-call crisis support after business hours
Rehabilitation Support
- Individual services to increase social, problem-solving, and independent living skills, promote positive decision making, and develop a support system - Job-related services to address the underlying mental health issues that affect job functioning, including connection to other employment rehabilitation and training providers (Crossroads, SETA, etc.) - Connection to community resources to promote stability in key areas, such as housing, food and clothing
Advocacy Services
Family Partners ensure that SCH services are family-friendly, culturally competent and stigma-free, provide peer support to caregivers, advocate for youth and family needs, and facilitate access to community resources. Youth Peer Mentors act as a positive influence, guide youth to explore and articulate their own values and beliefs, and serve as the voice for youth in SCH planning and policy-making

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
