Southeast Missouri Behavioral Health is a not-for-profit human services corporation that provides mental health services, substance abuse treatment and social services. Personnel are utilized to the extent of their abilities, education and experience in realizing our goals. The Agency's own interrelationship is such that all services are coordinated and not duplicated elsewhere in our communities. Each program offered by the Agency is distinct and designed to properly fulfill its goals and objectives.
Services Offered
Outpatient Counseling
Our Outpatient Counseling Services program provides psychosocial assessment and mental health evaluation, individuals, couples, family and group sessions are arranged according to a personalized treatment plan. We regard substance use disorder as a disease affecting the entire family and recognize that individuals may suffer from co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Family members are encouraged to participate and services are not limited to substance use disorders. Counseling for stress related issues, grief, behavioral issues, marriage, divorce, abuse, and other mental health issues are available.
Family Program
The Family Program is all encompassing treatment services management program for families and individual family members. Services Offered: Family Therapy, Family Conference, Parenting Skills, Mental Health Education, and Education in Family Issues. We specialize in Stress, Depression, Anxiety, Adolescent Conduct Disorders and Substance Use/Co-occurring disorders treatment.
Children First
Children First is a pre-divorce education program mandatory in some Missouri counties and required by judges when the custody of minor children is involved. The 2 1/2 hour educational series focuses on how to prevent children from becoming pawns and victims in a divorce by educating the divorcing parents. Parents must attend if under the same court jurisdiction.
CSTAR
The Comprehensive Substance Abuse Treatment and Recovery (CSTAR) program is a multi-level, individualized treatment program for drug and alcohol and co-occurring mental health disorders. CSTAR embodies current therapeutic applications of treatment, specific to individual patterns of drug and alcohol/co-occurring disorders.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
