Fees and Payment
Fees We believe that everyone deserves access to affordable counseling. In effort to make our services as accessible as possible, West Bergen is in-network with many but not all commercial insurance plans. In addition, we also accept both Medicare and Medicaid. For those who qualify, we also offer a reduced fee, sliding scale option for payment. Our Access and Benefits staff will assist you in determining whether or not your insurance plan is accepted by West Bergen. They can also provide you with information regarding eligibility to apply for our Sliding Scale Fee Program, should that be something you are interested in. While we cannot guarantee to accommodate all income levels, we will do our best to make counseling as affordable as possible.
Payment Payment for therapy is made at each session unless other arrangements are made with our Billing Department. We will accept cash, check (made payable to West Bergen Mental Healthcare) and credit card.
Insurance At this time, we do not participate in-network with Horizon Blue Cross/Blue Shield. As such, we do not bill Horizon BC/BS directly. Payment in full is expected at the time of service. Your therapist can provide you with receipts (sometimes referred to as a Super Bill) for you to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. To find out if your insurance offers reimbursements for therapy services, please contact them directly. Be sure to ask if your benefits cover mental health services provided out-of-network and what level of licensure they will accept. Please also note that whenever insurance is used for psychotherapy, the treatment must be considered "medically necessary" and will require the documentation of a diagnosis. Other personal information may also be required for reimbursement for therapeutic fees by your insurance provider.

Qualifying for assistance from New Jersey's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to New Jersey's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
