Headway Emotional Health Services' mission is to help you, your children and your family back on the path toward positive, fulfilling lives. We know what we're doing -- with more than 40 years in operation, Headway's 200 plus caring staff in Golden Valley, Richfield, Brooklyn Center and Hopkins provide comprehensive mental health therapy, counseling and classes to more than 45,000 families each year.
Originally called Storefront Youth Action, and then The Storefront Group, Headway was founded in 1970 by a group of suburban parents who wanted to help children and families in crisis in their communities. Their mission, still true today, was "to transform lives by providing hope, healing and empowerment through treatment, intervention and education."
Children and Adolescents * Outpatient Counseling - Headway offers one-on-one counseling for adolescents who are depressed, have neurological or behavioral issues, have been sexually or physically abused or neglected, or have other mental health issues. Our philosophy is to treat the whole child in a safe, supportive environment in the community or at school. Individual counseling is also a component of our adolescent Day Treatment program.
> Play Therapy - Play therapy is used as a technique with children or teens who have suffered traumatic events and are struggling to communicate.

Over time, family members use these sessions to participate in creating and reaching family treatment goals. Family therapy is also a component of our adolescent Day Treatment program.
> Group Therapy - In group therapy sessions, adolescents face issues such as peer relationships, social and emotional learning, and behaviors which interfere with day-to-day functioning. Group therapy is also a component of our adolescent Day Treatment program.
> Anger Management - Participants learn how to change their behavior and attitudes and gain insight into where uncontrolled anger comes from. In addition to assessments, we offer both group and individual therapy.
> Sexual Abuse Treatment - We offer individual, group, and family therapy as well as outreach, community education and advocacy services to children and adolescents who have been sexually abused and/or have acted out sexually.

Were You Able To Make an Appointment?
One quick last question. Who was seeking counseling today?
Do you know the reason they are not accepting clients?
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
