Each year we grant Top Non-Profit Badges to agencies based on these criteria:
- Consistently accepting clients
- Offering a wide range of services e.g. marriage counseling and child counseling as reported by our users.
- Our users reporting affordable services.
Our aim is to guide our users to agencies most likely to be able to help. In addition to the above criteria we also exercise editorial discretion with our choice based upon our experience. We take our responsibility and objectivity seriously. We don't accept any form of payment from providers for this honor.
Fuller Psychological & Family Services
FPFS therapists provide thousands of hours of therapy and assessment services each year to hundreds of clients in Pasadena, Los Angeles, and surrounding communities. Most of our therapists are students from the Fuller Graduate School of Psychology's Clinical Psychology Program and Marriage and Family Therapy Program. They are closely supervised by a network of licensed professionals employed by FPFS to help ensure they operate in an effective, safe, and ethical manner. In this way, FPFS contributes to the development of future mental health professionals while also addressing the mental health needs of local communities.
FPFS therapists provide therapy services to individuals (children, adolescents, and adults), couples, families, and groups, to address a variety of symptoms associated with issues including but not limited to anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, trauma, guilt, and bereavement. Additionally, a unique benefit that FPFS offers is the provision of psychotherapy services in five languages: Spanish, Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese, and English, to reflect the significant diversity present in the communities we serve.
Individual Adult Therapy
FPFS offers services to assist individuals experiencing various symptoms and problems. These include but are not limited to relationship difficulties, depression, anxiety, trauma, and symptoms/problems that often accompany diagnoses such as addictive and eating disorders.
- Individual Child/Adolescent Therapy
Psychotherapy can help children and adolescents who are experiencing difficulties with their emotions or behavior. Psychotherapy may involve an individual child, a group of children, a family, or multiple families. For children and adolescents, playing, drawing, building, and pretending, as well as talking, are important ways of sharing feelings and resolving problems.
- Couples / Family Therapy
FPFS offers therapy to assist people in dealing with the challenging dynamics of relationships, including therapy to address couples and family relationship issues.
- Premarital Counseling
Fuller Psychological & Family Services now offers a package of 8 premarital counseling sessions. This package is designed to help couples explore and strengthen important aspects of their relationships such as spiritual compatibility, finances, and conflict resolution.
- Group Therapy
Group therapy involves one or more therapists who lead a group of roughly 5 to 15 clients. Typically, groups meet for an hour or two each week. Some people attend individual therapy in addition to groups, while others participate in groups only.
Many groups are designed to target a specific problem such as depression, obesity, panic disorder, social anxiety, chronic pain, or substance abuse. Other groups focus more generally on improving social skills, helping people deal with a range of issues such as anger, shyness, loneliness and low self-esteem. Groups often help those who have experienced loss, whether it is a spouse, a child, or someone who died by suicide.
FPFS accepts only a few insurance carriers. However, If you have a health plan that is a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO), your clinician can provide you billing information that will allow you to seek reimbursement from your PPO.

One quick last question. Who was seeking counseling today?
Do you know the reason they are not accepting clients?
Qualifying for assistance from California's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to California's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
