In 1918, social work pioneers joined with Smith College administrators and the country’s preeminent psychiatrists to address the nation’s growing mental health crisis. Their radical experiment resulted in the first School for Social Work in the country and, in the hundred years since, has empowered change in the lives of countless individuals and families. On this site, you’ll learn how they did it and the challenges they faced along the way.
