Services Offered
Johnson Counseling Center - A licensed mental health clinic with a reputation for providing the highest quality comprehensive mental health services. Founded in 1953, the center was named after author, educator and civil rights leader James Weldon Johnson. Generations of families continue to use the Center and attest to our history of successful services. These services are provided by sensitive, experienced mental health professionals and are offered to children, adolescents, adults and older persons living in East Harlem and surrounding neighborhoods.
Children's Care Management - Provides services for children and adolescents ages 5-18 with serious emotional difficulties. The program works with children and their families to identify and utilize mental health counseling and, other supportive services and resources. Services will help the child/adolescent remain with their family and in the community. Our care managers have helped many children/adolescents and their families find specialized programs and services to meet their needs.
Early Childhood Mental Health - We've established satellite clinics at three of our Early Childhood Education sites. These clinics help families of young children access mental health services to address issues early, and help children who are having difficulties move to a healthy developmental trajectory. One of the interventions we provide at these sites is Child Parent Psychotherapy, an evidence-based model that treats the impact of trauma for both the child and the parent.
School Mental Health Program - Our Mental Health Services program operates satellite clinics at three East Harlem public schools (PS 72, PS 102 and PS 146). Our clinical staff provides individual, group and family therapy to approximately 85 students, along with their parents and teachers, at these clinics.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
