Family Service Rochester was founded in 1965 as a nonprofit organization with a staff of three and the mission to support and enhance the dignity and quality of life for individuals and families in our community.
For the past 15 years, Family Service Rochester has sharpened its focus to working with families with serious child welfare and/or family violence concerns. Major service expansions have been in the areas of child maltreatment, child welfare, children's mental health, domestic violence and providing our services to ethnically diverse populations in our community.

Family Service Rochester offers case management, counseling and therapy services to Veteran Families in Southeast Minnesota. A few of the areas we address: * Deployment or reintegration problems * Parenting concerns * Financial challenges * Marriage or other family relationship issues * Anxiety, depression and stress
Adults * Project Restore - A therapeutic, educational group that provides men the opportunity to increase their knowledge about domestic violence; to develop and use the non-violent, problem-solving and relationship skills; and to understand the damages resulting from domestic violence. This program meets the MN State Statutes standards for domestic abuse counseling and education programs.
* Dialectical Behavioral Therapy - Our trained therapists provide an intensive, comprehensive program for adults that struggle with emotional regulation and are at risk of self-injury or suicide. This program was developed by Dr. Marsha Lineman to treat individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder, and/or multiple mental health diagnoses. Research has demonstrated that DBT is the most effective treatment for reducing suicide and self-injury while helping people build a life worth living. Program components include individual therapy, skills training and phone coaching.
Children & Families * Children's Therapeutic Support Services (CTSS) - A flexible package of mental health services for children and their families who require varying levels of therapeutic and rehabilitative intervention. Our belief is that all family members should have services and support available to help assist the child in achieving the desired level of functioning.
* Trauma Focused - Our certified therapists utilize this short-term treatment with children between the ages of 3-18. Understanding, recognizing and responding to the effects of all types of trauma. An adult family member is involved in the service as childhood trauma not only affects individuals, but their families.
* Family Based Services - Unaddressed mental health and behavioral concerns can negatively impact a child's development, academic progress and disrupt family life. Our mental health professionals and practitioners provide counseling to families in their own homes. Through a variety of programs and interventions, families will identify their strengths, explore concerns to create and work an action plan.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
