Each year we grant Top Non-Profit Badges to agencies based on these criteria:
- Consistently accepting clients
- Offering a wide range of services e.g. marriage counseling and child counseling as reported by our users.
- Our users reporting affordable services.
Our aim is to guide our users to agencies most likely to be able to help. In addition to the above criteria we also exercise editorial discretion with our choice based upon our experience. We take our responsibility and objectivity seriously. We don't accept any form of payment from providers for this honor.
The Family Partnership
For over 139 years, The Family Partnership has been recognized as an innovative and highly impactful nonprofit in the Twin Cities area, and over one million children and families have benefited from our specialized services in order to realize their full potential - regardless of income or origin. Through counseling, education, and advocacy, we support children, families, and communities in need, and empower them to solve their own problems.
Community Mental Health Services
The Family Partnership provides school-based therapy to help alleviate access barriers to students from preschool to transitional/GED programs (birth through 21 years old). We provide high-quality therapy and diagnostic assessment where it is most accessible for students - in the schools. Common issues addressed include: depression, anxiety, ADHD, PTSD, Autism, behavioral difficulties, and various mental health-related issues.
Transgender Mental Health
The Family Partnership provides culturally relevant mental health counseling to members of the transgender community and their families. Our therapists can work with you to explore gender identity and to develop and pursue your gender goals. We use a variety of therapeutic approaches to match your needs, which may include completing an informed consent process to facilitate medical interventions. We also provide culturally informed therapy for issues such as depression, anxiety, grief and loss, family issues and trauma.
Multisystemic Therapy (MST)
MST (Multisystemic Therapy) is a brief, yet intensive, home-based treatment specifically designed for youth ages 12-17, currently living at home who exhibit high-risk behaviors that put them at risk for out-of-home placement.
There is no out-of-pocket cost for individuals and families and no one will be turned away from services based on lack of insurance.
Coverage for non-insured clients and deductibles are provided by a SLMH grant through the Department of Human Services.
The Family Partnership also utilizes funds provided by the Hennepin County Children's Mental Health Collaborative, which covers costs for those clients under the age of 18 who live in Hennepin County AND are uninsured.
Diagnostic assessments are provided for the family free of charge.
The Family Partnership will bill insurance when applicable.

Qualifying for assistance from Minnesota's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to Minnesota's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
