Each year we grant Top Non-Profit Badges to agencies based on these criteria:
- Consistently accepting clients
- Offering a wide range of services e.g. marriage counseling and child counseling as reported by our users.
- Our users reporting affordable services.
Our aim is to guide our users to agencies most likely to be able to help. In addition to the above criteria we also exercise editorial discretion with our choice based upon our experience. We take our responsibility and objectivity seriously. We don't accept any form of payment from providers for this honor.
Diverse & Resilient
Diverse & Resilient was founded in 1995 as a program to build the capacity of LGBTQ groups in Wisconsin. We engage in advocacy and provide both capacity-building and direct-service work to address the health disparities experienced by LGBTQ people in Wisconsin.
Our work is focused on: Anti-Violence, Cultivating Leaders, Sexual Health, and Substance Use.
Substance Use
Substance use and abuse in LGBTQ communities of Wisconsin is a complex issue and often prompts an array of feelings. Historically in the United States, bars and clubs have played and continue to play a vital part in the development of LGBTQ communities. Especially in smaller and less-developed communities, the importance of bars to the LGBTQ community cannot be overstated. This reality greatly complicates the mechanisms to address substance use.
HIV Counseling, Testing, & Referral
This site contains HIV prevention messages that may not be appropriate for all audiences.
Our HIV counseling, testing, & referral (CTR) program offers individual risk assessment, counseling, HIV testing, prevention education, and referrals to services for HIV-positive people and high-risk HIV-negative people in Milwaukee. These services are provided to increase the number of men who know their HIV status, encourage and support men to adopt behaviors to reduce their risk of HIV transmission, and ensure that men are linked to appropriate medical, social, prevention, and partner services as needed.
Anti-Violence
Diverse & Resilient LGBTQ anti-violence programs serve survivors of all violence: intimate partner, sexual, and hate- or community-based violence.
We work directly with survivors of violence by listening, helping safety plan, and referring to inclusive shelters and programs within their communities in Wisconsin.

One quick last question. Who was seeking counseling today?
Do you know the reason they are not accepting clients?
Qualifying for assistance from Wisconsin's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to Wisconsin's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
