Piedmont Community Services
Community Service Boards are joint partnerships between local and state governments, and they provide mental health , intellectual disability and substance abuse services. Initially created by Virignia statute in 1968, there are now 40 Community Service Boards. CSB's are agents of local communities and operate under regulations of the Viriginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services.

Services Offered
Psychiatric Services - Psychiatric assessment, medication maintenance, and state aftercare pharmacy services are available. Contract psychiatrists and psychiatric nurses are available to provide these services.
Counseling Services - PCS offers a wide range of counseling services to address behavioral health needs. Service providers are qualified professionals with training and experience in specialized program areas. Programs include: Motivational Services, Assessment & Evaluation, and Outpatient Therapy. All programs are able to serve individuals with Mental Health and/or Substance Use Disorders. The frequency of appointments and duration of services depends on the needs of the individual.
Case Management Services - These services are provided to adults and children with serious mental and/or substance use disorders. Case managers provide ongoing comprehensive needs assessment and link individuals to services to help them stay in the community and achieve maximum recovery and quality of life.
Crisis Services - Members of clinical staff are trained and experienced in psychiatric crisis assessment and intervention. This service also includes screening for referral to detoxification services. Crisis Services are available Monday through Friday during regular business hours.
Mental Health Support Services - This service is targeted at adults with severe mental illness and a history of at least one psychiatric hospitalization. It seeks to provide consumers with training in areas of activities of daily living, as well as developing a health and better understanding of psychiatric illnesses.
Therapeutic Day Treatment Services - This is a school-based program focused on assisting children with behavioral and emotional problems to cope with their symptoms and to succeed in the school, at home and in the community. A counselor is available to provide intensive assistance throughout the school day.
Fees and Payment
It is the policy of Piedmont Community Services to serve all local residents in need of assistance. We are obligated to collect the cost of treatment provided from third party payers and from individuals and families who are able to pay.
No one will be denied services due to an inability to pay. Every effort will be made to set fees fairly, according to the ability to pay.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
