Open Door Health Center is a non-profit organization that provides affordable health care on a sliding-fee scale to uninsured and under-insured people in southern Minnesota. We provide medical, dental, medication assistance, behavioral health services, community health services, as well as comprehensive lab services. Interpreter services are available for non-English speaking patients.

We provide quality, comprehensive, friendly, culturally sensitive care throughout our organization. We support our patients' overall well-being through referrals to our medical and behavioral health providers when recommended. We offer behavioral health services in the primary care setting for individuals and families including: Integrated with dental and medical care Outpatient mental health services Child- and adolescent-focused therapy Play therapy 0-5 behavioral health assessments Community health services Mental health and wellness education Marriage and couples therapy Family counseling LGBTQI-affirming providers Anxiety and depression screening Assessments for drug & alcohol abuse and addiction Support groups Refugee- and immigrant-specific mental health assessments Trauma-focused therapy EMDR Grief counseling Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Referrals to community resources such as food, housing, insurance enrollment, treatment centers
Behavioral health services are available at our main site in Mankato. Referrals will be made to other mental health providers if clients are unable to travel to Mankato.
Fees and Payment
At Open Door Health Center, we can certainly be considered your primary medical providers. We are pleased to offer a wide range of treatment options that address your health needs. We provide medical care to our patients regardless of insurance, and additionally offer a discount based on several factors including income, household size, etc. We do not list treatment fees on our website as our sliding fee discounts, along with variables in treatment options do make each treatment plan truly different and unique for each patient.
We ask all of our patients to pay something to help cover the cost of their visit. We do invoice patients and offer payment plans to help them. Unfortunately, we are not able to see our patients free of charge.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
