Northern Pines is a comprehensive community mental health center that was established in 1964, with a six-county service area in Central Minnesota that includes Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, Morrison, Todd, and Wadena counties. We have offices in Brainerd, Little Falls, Long Prairie, Staples, Wadena, Aitkin, Pine River and Onamia.

Adult Community Based Services Mental health practitioners who provide community support and skills training in the community.
Assertive Community Treatment Services A service delivery model with a team-based approach. The team provides community based therapeutic services to individuals with a persistent mental illness that challenges their life.
Behavioral Health Home A service delivery model that is client centered, recovery oriented and health and wellness focused.
Birth-to-Age 5 Services Assisting and treating children under the age of 5.
Certified Peer Specialist Services Promotes self-determination, personal responsibility and empowerment inherent in recovery.
Chemical Health Services Provide individualized outpatient treatment to adults & adolescents (ages 13+)
Childrens and Families Division Community and school support for children dealing with emotional problems.
Diagnostic Assessments Complete assessment of the client's current condition.
Drop-In Centers Provides a safe and fun environment for all adults with a mental illness.
Safe Harbor Provides supervised adult crisis residential stabilization service. Chemical Health Services
NPMHC-CHS is designed to provide individualized outpatient treatment to adult & adolescent males and females ages 13+ who suffer from chemical dependency and /or co-occurring disorders (mental illness and substance abuse).
Adult Outpatient Program The adult program is offered to clients who are 18+ and are struggling with chemical dependency issues and/or co-occurring disorders. Adolescent Outpatient Program -Brainerd Only The adolescent program is co-ed and offered to those ages 13-17, or those age 18 who are still in high school or have been assessed to show a need for adolescent services.
Family Involvement Family involvement is an important part of the recovery process. We encourage open communication between clients, counselors, and family members to identify issues and promote healing.
Rule 25 Assessments We perform chemical health assessments required by courts and insurance companies, or those referred by self or others in order to establish chemical health concerns and diagnosis.
Children & Families Division
It is our goal to assist youth to remain in their homes, schools, and communities by addressing their individual mental health needs in the least restrictive environment, accomplished by various treatment interventions in the context of safe, trusting and nurturing relationships
School Based Programs Children's Therapeutic Support Services (CTSS) school based program is a counseling program consisting of skills training, counseling, and therapy for students with emotional/behavioral difficulties. A diagnostic assessment will be completed which will determine needed services such as: - Individual Therapy - Group Therapy - Family Therapy - Individual Skills Training - Group Skills Training - Family Skills Training - Crisis Assistance
In-Home CTSS An individualized treatment plan is developed for the student and family, which is culturally sensitive and addresses family concerns. The goals set within the treatment plan are measured for success and once the child reaches consistency in completing these goals, they then graduate from the program. Once the child and family reaches consistency in completing goals, then services are discontinued.
Fees and Payment
A Minnesota nonprofit corporation, Northern Pines provides reduced or no-fee services, based on its sliding fee scale.
CHS Services are billed hourly. We accept state of MN insurance plans, private insurance, self-payment and county funding.
CTSS is a covered service under Medical Assistance and PMAP programs. Counties may have resources for payment for families they refer. Commercial insurance providers vary in their coverage of these services.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
