Each year we grant Top Non-Profit Badges to agencies based on these criteria:
- Consistently accepting clients
- Offering a wide range of services e.g. marriage counseling and child counseling as reported by our users.
- Our users reporting affordable services.
Our aim is to guide our users to agencies most likely to be able to help. In addition to the above criteria we also exercise editorial discretion with our choice based upon our experience. We take our responsibility and objectivity seriously. We don't accept any form of payment from providers for this honor.
Irving Family Advocacy Center
We serve Irving families who have experienced domestic violence, are victims of crime and who have juvenile offenders in their homes. Depending upon the number of interns on staff, we can sometimes extend our services to families who are having relationship difficulties and children who have behavioral problems at school. We see families and individuals with the intent of providing assessment and intervention. Our facility does not evaluate individuals for the sole purpose of assessing their competence to return to work or school. However, for clients who are involved in ongoing services and are returning to work or school following a session, we are happy to provide a note stating the day and time of their appointment.
Crime Victim Services - The FAC's Victim Services Unit is responsible for providing services to victims of violent crime. This includes notifying victims of their rights, answering victims' questions, explaining the justice process and making them aware of the support services that are available to victims.
Counseling Services - However, Irving FAC Counseling Services is not a crisis intervention facility. Our team does not serve individuals who are psychiatrically unstable, including those experiencing psychotic symptoms (active hallucinations, delusions); major depressive disorder with vegetative symptoms; severe autism spectrum disorder; active suicidal thinking with intent, means and plan; who are violent offenders; or impaired by current drug or alcohol abuse.
Group Counseling - The Irving FAC offers free counseling services for victims of crime, domestic violence and families with high-risk juveniles in family, couple or individual therapy settings, as well as education classes. Group counseling and education classes are offered for parenting, anger management, overcoming domestic violence, trauma from crime victimization, child abuse and others. Play therapy counseling is provided for children victimized by abuse or witness to domestic violence.
Parenting Group - Clients meet with a group facilitator for eight to 12 weekly sessions to learn various parenting techniques and have an opportunity to process how this information might be applied in their families. Parents have stated that hearing others share about dynamics within their families help them know they are not alone and they feel supported.
Anger Management - During eight to 12 weekly sessions, clients will be better able to cope with life's stressors. They will learn coping mechanisms and how to express their anger in healthy ways.
Overcoming Domestic Violence - Clients who think they may be experiencing some type of domestic violence - such as emotional, verbal, physical or sexual - attend this group for eight to 12 weekly sessions. After learning about the Cycle of Violence, The Power and Control Wheel and Red Flags in Relationships, they can make more informed decisions about their safety.
Children's Domestic Violence Group - While parents are attending the group for adults, children ages six to 12 can participate in activities designed to help them express their feelings in effective ways. They are given opportunities to safely discuss their emotions and explore healthy coping mechanisms.
Child Abuse Investigations - The Child Abuse Unit is responsible for investigating all criminal allegations of abuse of a child that are committed within the family.

One quick last question. Who was seeking counseling today?
Do you know the reason they are not accepting clients?
Qualifying for assistance from Texas' program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to Texas' program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
