Pathways Behavioral Services is a nonprofit corporation licensed by the Iowa Department of Public Health and accredited by the Department of Human Services. Founded in 1967 to serve clients solely in Black Hawk County, Pathways today offers substance abuse and mental health prevention and treatment services to people in six northeast Iowa counties. With 128,012 residents, urban Black Hawk County is home to 50 percent more people than the combined populations of the five outlying, rural counties Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw and Grundy.
Mental Health Services Our outpatient psychotherapy and counseling services offer a dynamic process in which therapists use professional skills, knowledge and training to help individuals using the service to realize and mobilize their strengths and abilities; take charge of their lives; and resolve issues and problems. Psychotherapy services are offered individually, in group and/ or with families and are provided by our qualified mental health staff.

Addiction Treatment Substance Abuse Treatment Services Pathways Behavioral Services believes that alcoholism and other chemical dependencies are primary, progressive, chronic, and fatal diseases. This concept of chemical dependency as a disease means the individual is a victim of the illness just like an individual with cancer or diabetes. Chemical dependency adversely affects individuals in mental, physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and decision making areas of life.
Outpatient Treatment The least intensive level of care is outpatient counseling. It is recommended for the majority of our clients allowing the client to stay in their home and attend work or school.
Gambling Treatment and Recovery Support Services Pathways offers gambling treatment, prevention and recovery support services in Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw, Grundy, Marshall, and Tama Counties in Iowa.
Prevention Services
Community Coalitions Pathways works with a number of coalitions in Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw, and Grundy counties to help area communities address substance use/addiction and problem gambling. Activities conducted by these community coalitions include: -Increasing community awareness of substance abuse issues -Working to encourage positive substance use/ abuse policy changes both locally and state-wide -Promoting positive activities for youth development and volunteerism -Reducing youth access to substances such as tobacco and alcohol
Fees and Payment
Pathways accepts most insurances and Medicaid to cover the cost of treatment services. Any part of the treatment costs not covered by insurance may be paid by cash, check or credit/debit card. These payments can be received in person at any of our locations, by mail, and even over the phone by calling in with your credit/debit card information. No credit card information is stored on Pathways' computer system for your protection.

Pathways offers a sliding fee scale for our clients with household incomes below 200% of poverty that do not have Medicaid coverage.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
