Established in 1950, Riverbend provides a variety of mental health, substance abuse, and psychiatric services to citizens of Northwest Alabama. Riverbend is a locally operated, public not-for-profit facility serving over 7,500 clients each year throughout Colbert, Franklin, and Lauderdale counties.

Services Offered
Adult Programs * Outpatient Counseling - Riverbend provides services on an outpatient basis to those clients who present with psychiatric, substance abuse, and behavioral problems, which require diagnostic evaluation and/or treatment.
Individual, family, and group therapy are offered to clients in addition to psycho-educational groups. Treatment may include coordination with family, schools, physicians, and other agencies as appropriate.
* Substance Abuse Programs - Riverbend provides intensive outpatient treatment for substance abuse. This program consists of twelve hours weekly of service based upon the twelve-step and medical models of treatment. In addition to traditional substance abuse group therapy, both individual and family therapies are required, as is attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous meetings.
Riverbend also provides an aftercare program for clients who have successfully completed our outpatient program. For the dually diagnosed client, psychiatric services are available as appropriate from Riverbend's psychiatric services program.
Child/Adolescent Programs * Outpatient Counseling Riverbend provides services on an outpatient basis to those children and adolescents who present with psychiatric, adjustment, substance abuse, and behavioral problems, which require diagnostic evaluation and/or treatment.
Individual, family, and group therapy are offered to children and adolescents in addition to psycho-educational groups. Treatment may include coordination with family, schools, physicians, and other agencies as appropriate
* Pre-School Program Riverbend provides a pre-school day treatment program designed for children ages two through five who display characteristics of emotional conflict, behavioral, psychological, and/or educational difficulties.
Riverbend treatment for pre-school children participating in this program includes behavior modification programs, family therapy, parent education, as well as socialization and recreational activities.
* Substance Abuse Programs Substance abuse treatment services and intensive therapeutic interventions provided to adolescents designed to initiate and promote the consumer's ability to: 1) maintain a drug free lifestyle, 2) decrease criminal behavior, 3) increase adaptive behavior in the school setting, and 4) increase healthy family interaction. Services are provided in a non-residential treatment facility.
Fees and Payment
Riverbend will not discriminate against any person receiving health services because of his/her inability to pay for services. Health services will be provided at a reduced charge based upon the sliding fee scale.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
