At Prelude Behavioral Services, everything we do is inspired and guided by our mission, vision and values. These principals are the foundation of the beliefs and actions of all of our employees every day.
Prelude provides a full continuum of substance abuse services to Iowans, including prevention and early intervention, evaluation, detoxification, outpatient and residential treatment, halfway and transitional housing, and case management. Since 1984, Prelude has also offered general mental health counseling and has administered an Employee Assistance Program for Iowa businesses through its Synchrony Services program. Prelude began providing problem gambling prevention, education, and treatment services in 2007.
Substance Abuse Services * Detox - Our Iowa City detoxification unit provides a safe and medically-supervised place for individuals to withdraw from drugs or alcohol and stabilize before engaging in a treatment program. This allows for a smooth transition into our treatment community and encourages continued involvement in one's treatment journey. * 24 Hour Residential - Residential care is our most involved and comprehensive level of care and is offered in both Des Moines and Iowa City. The program is designed to provide an intensive and nurturing treatment experience in a 24-hour setting. Patients frequently have questions about other conditions in addition to substance abuse, such as depression or anxiety. Prelude's clinical staff can assist you in addressing mental health conditions at the same time you are addressing your addiction concerns. * Outpatient Services - Our outpatient services are provided to adolescents, adults, and families. The services include assessment, individual and various group counseling sessions. The evaluation is to help identify and determine areas a patient may need or would like to focus on to enhance their quality of life. * Continuing Care - We encourage everyone to remain involved in continuing care services upon completion of primary services. Research suggests that continuing care involvement for two years has a significant impact on ongoing recovery.
Mental Health Services Prelude offers programs specifically for co-occurring disorders, focusing on those in need of both mental health as well as substance abuse treatment.

Were You Able To Make an Appointment?
One quick last question. Who was seeking counseling today?
Do you know the reason they are not accepting clients?
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
