Applewood Centers is a private, non-profit agency providing mental health services, social services and education to children, adolescents and families living in Cuyahoga and Lorain counties. Dedicated to addressing a variety of behavioral, emotional and learning problems, we provide a continuum of care from outpatient counseling to residential treatment. Services include residential treatment programs, foster care and adoption, The Gerson School - an alternative day school, and an array of community-based services including psychiatry, in-home therapy, school-based counseling, prevention and consultation services. Services Offered

Counseling and Outpatient Services
Our counseling and outpatient services are designed to help children and young adults (up to age 21) and their families. Services include individual, family and group therapy provided by licensed social workers, counselors, psychologists and psychiatrists.
* Outpatient Counseling - For children and young adults up to age 25 who have mental health issues or exhibiting a variety of problematic behavioral issues. Alcohol and Drug Assessment and Treatment Services for youth up to age 18 who have co-occurring mental health disorders with substance abuse.
* Lorain Intensive Home-Based Treatment - For youth who have severe emotional disturbance and in need of intensive level of mental health treatment to be stable and safe.
* Community Psychiatric Supportive Treatment (CPST) - wraparound services for children and youth with emotional and behavioral disturbance who have been witnesses of violence, are reunifying with their families and/or are in conflict with their parents.
* Multisystemic Therapy (MST) - For youth exhibiting problematic sexual behavior or serious behavioral problems and are at risk of becoming involved with the juvenile justice system.
* Trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - Helping children who have experienced very difficult or frightening events.
* Early Childhood Mental Health - For children birth to age 6 who are experiencing social, emotional or behavioral difficulties.
* Special Needs Child Care Consultation - Training for child care providers, parents and home-based care givers.

School-Based Counseling Services
The School-Based Counseling program is offered to students through grade 12 and is specifically beneficial to those who may have the following issues:
* Parent-child or child-sibling relations
* Attention deficit related problems
* Oppositional behaviors
* Depression, anxiety and/or self-esteem issues
* Domestic violence and/or abuse
* Attachment disorders
* Grief and loss
* Aggression
* Trauma-focused issues
* School-related issues
* Adoption and foster care adjustment issues

Services are delivered to students in a variety of ways
- Individual Counseling provided at school addresses specific behavioral and emotional issues. In-home counseling is available as needed.
- Group Counseling sessions are aimed at skill building and focus on specific topics. This format encourages cooperation and sharing among peers in a structured setting.
- Prevention Groups help students make better choices. Topics include anger management, Peacemakers Violence Prevention program, social skills, and those covering gender-specific issues.
- Classroom Presentations are offered on topics such as building self-esteem, conflict resolution, leadership skills, grief and bereavement.

After School Group Counseling
Applewood Center's After School Group Counseling program provides intensive group counseling for children ages 6 to 18 who have severe emotional and behavioral difficulties, which could include:
- Extreme fears
- Anger
- Mood disturbance
- Depression
- Impulse
- Aggressive behaviors
- Trauma
- Multiple losses
- Relationship difficulties with peers and adults

Psychiatry Services
We provide psychiatric evaluations of children and teens, and medication management for a variety of disorders including:
- Developmental and learning issues
- Mood (including depression and bipolar)
- Eating disorders
- Schizophrenia and other thought disorders
- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Other behavior and disruptive disorders
