Each year we grant Top Non-Profit Badges to agencies based on these criteria:
- Consistently accepting clients
- Offering a wide range of services e.g. marriage counseling and child counseling as reported by our users.
- Our users reporting affordable services.
Our aim is to guide our users to agencies most likely to be able to help. In addition to the above criteria we also exercise editorial discretion with our choice based upon our experience. We take our responsibility and objectivity seriously. We don't accept any form of payment from providers for this honor.
The California Family Counseling Center (CalFam)
California Family Counseling (CalFam), is a counseling program operated by Phillips Graduate Universtiy in Chatsworth, California. We are a nonprofit community mental health center and training facility for marriage and family therapists. To serve the diversity of our community, we provide a variety of sliding-scale mental health services including individual, couple, family, child/adolescent, LGBTQIAQ, and group therapy.
We offer accessible and affordable counseling services to individuals, couples, and families across diverse communities. Fees are based on a sliding scale. No insurance is required.
Individual Therapy
Work one-on-one with a skilled therapist in a safe, confidential environment. Our therapists work from a variety of different orientations in order to meet the needs of our clients.
Couple Therapy
Couples therapy will help you and your partner strengthen your relationship. Trained therapists can facilitate communication of thoughts and feelings to gain a better perspective of the relationship and types of changes that need to be made.
Family Therapy
The family is a social system where change or illness in one family member may impact the larger family dynamic. Our therapists use a family systems perspective to understand family history, communication patterns and dynamics to see the bigger picture of the presenting problem and develop strategies for long-term improvement.
Group Therapy
Group therapy involves two therapists leading a small group struggling with a specific problem such as parenting issues or anger management. Sharing experiences within a group helps us remember that we are not alone.
Child / Teen Therapy
Our therapists are trained to work with children as young as six regarding behavioral issues, school and academic problems, grief and loss, and divorce.
Latino Family Therapy
The Counseling Center trains a group of therapists to primarily work with the Latino/Latina and Spanish speaking community. These therapists use a family systems perspective with their clients and work on the cultural integration of family dynamics.
LGBTQ
The Counseling Center is a safe and confidential environment for the LGBTQ community and our therapists are trained to work with those in the coming-out process, identity exploration, social pressures, and relational issues.
Art Therapy
The Counseling Center has several art therapists who work with individuals, children, families, and couples through an artistic medium, allowing clients to express feelings in other ways than talking.
Co-occuring Disorders
Our therapists are trained to treat mental health and addiction issues (alcoholism, chemical dependency, and process addictions) concurrently to provide competent and appropriate client care.
The CalFam Counseling program is operated by the David H. Fox Counseling Center, a nonprofit, outpatient counseling center dedicated to providing quality, affordable mental health services. Fees are based upon your ability to pay. No insurance is required.

Qualifying for assistance from California's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to California's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
