Outpatient Services
Outpatient mental healthcare services include one-to-one counseling to help adults, children and adolescents recover from any type of mental health issue such as depression, anxiety and mood disorders, as well as grief, trauma and more complex problems (for example, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders).

Crisis Stabilization and Detoxification
Serving all counties in Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Region 1 Crisis stabilization services are a first-line alternative to hospitalization in state hospitals, providing psychiatric stabilization and detoxification for adults age 18 and over on a short-term basis. Highland Rivers has three crisis stabilization units (CSUs) that operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week as emergency receiving and evaluation facilities. The CSUs are available to residents of all 12 counties Highland Rivers serves.

Outpatient Recovery Services
Addiction and substance abuse outpatient recovery services help individuals learn how to manage life issues and day-to- day living without the use of mood- or mind-altering substances or drugs. Outpatient substance use services include one-to- one, group and family counseling to help individuals recover from substance use or abuse, dependence, addiction or withdrawal. Addictive disease and substance abuse recovery services are individual- and family-centered. Individuals are encouraged to be actively involved in their treatment to learn to manage their symptoms, enhance their ability to cope with challenges in life, build resilience and facilitate recovery.

Fees and Payment
We accept Medicaid, Medicare, self-pay and most types of commercial insurance. We also contract with the VA for veterans who need our services. Please note that not all payors (commercial insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, etc.) cover all services; individuals will be made aware of any coverage limits and fees as part of the financial application process. If you do not have the ability to pay or do not have insurance, you may be eligible for a sliding fee scale or state-contracted services.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
