KIDS Center is a medical model child abuse intervention center providing child abuse evaluations that include a head-to-toe medical exam, child-friendly forensic interview and family support services to help connect families with community resources to minimize life stressors and reduce future opportunities for abuse to occur. We also offer therapeutic services to help children and families begin to process and overcome the trauma of abuse. In addition, our services include prevention programs to help teach adults in our community how to better protect children from abuse. Services Offered
Our on-site Child and Family Therapists help children heal from the trauma of abuse through various types of therapeutic practices. We have a full time KIDS Center Therapist and four additional Therapists who work for Deschutes County Behavioral Health services. All our Therapists are based on-site but can see children in Redmond and La Pine as well.
Child Counseling
We use several evidence-based therapy approaches at KIDS Center including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TFCBT) which focuses on helping children tell their stories and process their thoughts and feelings related to the abuse in a safe environment. This approach also provides caregivers with the information and skills needed to support their children during the recovery process. In cases of acute trauma, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is another commonly used approach at KIDS Center. Play therapy is one of the most powerful ways we can help children. Drawing, playing with toys, using a sand tray and playing therapeutic games all help a child feel safe, comfortable and able to open up to how they feel. All our therapy sessions are tailored to the child's developmental age and are focused on working with the child's current behavior, concerns and challenges.
Family Counseling
At KIDS Center, we firmly believe that working within the family system to facilitate support and continued care is essential for a child to heal from abuse. With an emphasis of building strong attachments and nurturing home environments, our Therapists also provide family therapy and case management services to help reduce any barriers to recovery and connect caregivers with the resources they need. Another example of our whole family approach includes our Bridges to Healing Program designed for children who are victims of intrafamilial sexual abuse and their family members. This program involves weekly support groups for child victims, their siblings and their non-offending caregivers. These groups are trauma focused in nature and designed to address and reduce the stress and loss often experienced following a child's disclosure of abuse by a close family member. Caregivers are also coached on ways to emotionally support their children, while managing their own secondary trauma following disclosures of sexual abuse.

Qualifying for assistance from Oregon's program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to Oregon's program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
