Services Offered
Community Counseling Services - Our Master's level therapists provide outpatient counseling services to individuals and families in the Bangor and Easton communities of northeastern Pennsylvania. Psychiatric medication management is also available. Community Counseling Services helps clients utilize strengths-based strategies to manage distressing symptoms. In doing so, clients can improve day-to-day functioning and enjoy a reduction in symptoms such as anxiety, sadness and hopelessness. Parenting and Social Skills Supportive group therapy is also offered. Most insurance is accepted for payment; a sliding fee scale is available to those who qualify.
Family Group Decision Making - Through the Bangor office of Community Counseling Services, we offer Family Group Decision Making, an approach that emphasizes the family's strengths and addresses the overall needs of the family as a whole. Through its focus on the family system, FGDM addresses intense conflict while promoting the communal spirit of the family. This service helps to facilitate the family's role as the primary decision maker, one that holds the responsibility for the plan's implementation, developed in collaboration with identified supports.
Parenting & Children's Services - Methodist's Parenting and Children's Services Program teaches parents to understand and use effective, positive parenting techniques. Using the Nurturing Parenting and IFP curricula and tools we work to help parents, grandparents, guardians and families master problem-solving skills and techniques. Within the framework of interactive group settings, caregivers are taught the responsibilities parents have to their children; the stages of development that all children must go through; and the amazing capabilities and vulnerability of the brain. Information regarding children's educational needs and what is available in the school system, is also introduced and discussed in these group sessions. Parents are encouraged to build healthy relationships with their children; develop strategies for spending positive quality one-on-one time; and create opportunities to grow as families.
Housing/Residential Services - Catastrophic life events, serious, persistent and chronic behavioral health challenges and/or lack of parenting skills can lead to a disruption of familial safety, stability, well-being and unity. When disruption occurs in the form of children placed in foster care and/or homelessness, Methodist can provide the intensive supports and services necessary to stabilize the family and restore their lives.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
