Each year we grant Top Non-Profit Badges to agencies based on these criteria:
- Consistently accepting clients
- Offering a wide range of services e.g. marriage counseling and child counseling as reported by our users.
- Our users reporting affordable services.
Our aim is to guide our users to agencies most likely to be able to help. In addition to the above criteria we also exercise editorial discretion with our choice based upon our experience. We take our responsibility and objectivity seriously. We don't accept any form of payment from providers for this honor.
Austin Academy for Individual and Relations Therapy
At Austin Family Institute (AFI), we seek to provide therapy to all. We offer couples and family therapy, as well as individual and child and adolescent therapy.
Family Therapy
We are not only family therapists, but trainers and educators. Three of our directors and faculty teach couple and family therapy in the Master of Arts in Counseling program at St. Edward's University. All of our staff are involved in community education, helping to inform parents, teenagers, teachers, couples, and clinicians of the impact of family therapy mental health and well-being.
Couples Therapy
When we treat couples and marriages, we don't just help individuals, we help relationships. Whether you need marriage counseling, help resolving conflict that doesn't seem to end, or help recovering from the trauma of infidelity, we are equipped to help your relationship.
What makes our approach to couples therapy different? We are couple and family therapists trained to understand behavioral and mental health challenges are also relational challenges. We are specifically trained in the steps required to help marriages and relationships recover from high-conflict, abusive relationships, and couples thinking about divorce.
Counseling For You
At the Austin Family Institute, we are dedicated to treating the concerns that you bring to therapy. Whether you bring your family, your relationship, or yourself, our goal is to help you achieve the change that you are hoping for. Are you struggling with anxiety or depression? Have you experienced a recent loss of a loved one, not sure how to grieve? Do you need help overcoming addictive behaviors? Our staff are trained to help you through even the most challenging of life's obstacles.
Our directors and faculty operate at a fixed fee. All associate therapists operate on a sliding scale. To determine the sliding scale cost for associate therapists, we consider your income and number of dependents.

Qualifying for assistance from Texas' program usually depends on the severity of your condition and financial circumstance. Read our full guide to Texas' program.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
