The Counselling Service offers psychological therapy, advice and guidance to University of Manchester students and staff. Our priority is to help keep users of the Service safe and well through a variety of interventions.

Services Offered
One-to-one Counselling
We offer psychological therapy addressing issues that our clients bring. Our therapists are trained in a variety of approaches including: Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Counselling, EMDR and Person Centred Counselling. We aim to offer appointments within two weeks, and work with other health professionals to provide additional, ongoing emotional support when necessary. We also have a part-time Mental Health Worker, and a consultant Psychiatrist, who can, if appropriate, see clients of the Counselling Service. The Service generally refers clients who require longer-term psychotherapy or secondary care.
Wellbeing Programme
A well-established programme has been developed in collaboration with SPORT, offering a wide range of workshops and courses throughout the year, including vacation time, to support areas of concern including: - Managing anxiety - Coping better with low mood - Improving self confidence - Regaining focus at work - Coping better with stress - Learning to be more assertive - Mindfulness meditation
Workshops can be booked directly by completing a workshop booking form. Some workshops are by Counsellor referral only, this will be stated on the course timetable if applicable.
Self-help resources
The Counselling Service offers an innovative online confidential self-help programme called Beingwell. Beingwell helps develop skills and strategies to enhance well-being, offering advice on stress, anxiety, insomnia and low mood.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
