The Maya Centre is a small charity, providing a free counselling service in Islington for women who have experienced Mental health issues Trauma, Gender based violence, including domestic violence, physical abuse or childhood sexual abuse and harmful traditional practices.
Our charity is a multi-ethnic women only counselling service, managed and governed by a team of professional women. Our counsellors are all female and are qualified, skilled and experienced, and are well supported through supervision and professional development. They are expert in working with women whose mental health has been harmed by gender-based violence, or abuse, trauma, neglect and deprivation; often complex, multi-layered experiences.
We pride ourselves on the quality of the services we offer. Our counselling services are accredited by the BACP and APPTS.

1:1 Counselling
- We carry out detailed assessments of the therapeutic needs of women referred to us prior to offering 1:1 counselling - Women/clients are then offered a length of counselling which best meets their needs, with a counsellor who will be the best possible match according to experience, availability and client preference (Language or ethnicity). All our counsellors work with cultural sensitivity. - We also have therapists who specialize in therapeutic work with survivors of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM)
Group Counselling
We offer a range of counselling groups which offer women the opportunity to further their journey of recovery by working together with other women who have a shared experience and a collective understanding of how their experiences have impacted them.Other than working on specific issues these groups aim to decrease feelings of isolation and to help build support networks.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
