Alcohol and other drug counselling - At Taeaomanino we provide confidential, quality and primary drug counselling to clientele, especially to Pacific people and their families who are residing in Wellington, Porirua and Kapiti Coast. Our services are free of charge. We are interested in getting you the help you need and will do our very best to help you. Our overall objective is to confront the service user in a non-threatening but honest way and allow them to see their self-destructive behaviour and how it affects themselves, family and friends. This is done with strict confidentiality, in a clear and respectful way, with empathy and support.

Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services - We are a Pacific Community Mental Health service funded by the Ministry of Health to provide free specialist mental health services for Pacific children and adolescents between 0-19 years in the Porirua basin. We provide culturally appropriate assessment and intervention for our Pacific Island service users and families. The Youth 2007 Survey and Ministry of Health data show that Pacific young people are approximately twice as likely to have depression, be anxious, or to make suicide attempts, compared with the rest of the youth population. Pacific young people are approximately half as likely as European young people to be hospitalised for depression or a suicide attempt.
Individual & Family Counselling - We support Pacific families and individuals residing in Wellington, Hutt Valley, Porirua and Kapiti to develop skills to cope with different life situations, to reflect and promote self-healing. We will discuss therapeutic interventions with you and your family, aiga potopoto or support people, and together, decide the best way forward.
One-on-one: individual counselling - The counsellor gives one person their undivided and close attention and assists in identifying and fulfilling individual wishes and needs. In individual counselling, the focus is by definition on one person, but the counsellor has a responsibility to people beyond that person. If counselling produces change, this will not be restricted to the individual, but will ripple outwards towards their family and people they come into contact with. To achieve expected positive results, our counsellors use a variety of approaches such as Fonofale, Te Whare Tapa Wha, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Solution Focus, Narrative, Motivational Interviewing, Systemic Approach, Client Centred Therapy and Existential Therapy. The schedule generally consists of one session each week for a total of 8-12 sessions. Each session is about one hour long.

If You Call, Please Let Us Know How it Went:
Were You Able to Make an Appointment?
One quick last question. Who was seeking counseling today?
Do you know the reason they are not accepting clients?
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
