Services Offered
Counselling - For Individuals, couples, families and whanau who want to work with a professional counsellor to bring about positive change in their lives. How We aim to provide a safe, respectful place for individuals, couples, families and whanau to resolve personal, social, or psychological challenges and difficulties, including anxiety, depression, grief and loss, trauma, sexuality, parenting, and other emotional and relationship issues. Counsellors help clients to see things more clearly and support you to focus on feelings, experiences or behaviour that will lead to positive change.
Anxiety and depression - Everyone can feel anxious or depressed from time to time. However, too much anxiety or depression, or constantly being anxious or depressed, can be unhealthy to our lives and our relationships. Talking it through with a Counsellor can help you to understand what's going on, identify what triggers your anxiety or depression, and put some strategies in place to help you cope and work towards feeling better.
Grief and loss - If you're dealing with the loss of a loved one, our Counsellors can support you and help you to find ways to work through your grief. It doesn't matter how long ago you experienced the loss - sometimes grief comes back when we least expect it, and can affect everyone in different ways.
Family/ Whanau - After a death of a family member, communication between family members can be a challenge as each person responds to loss in different ways. Sometimes outside help is needed to assist families to express their concerns, anxiety and sadness in a safe setting. This can help families express and share their loss with each other in a meaningful, constructive way.
Parenting - We're here to support parents to raise their children in a safe, loving and happy environment. Our counsellors are experienced in working with parents/caregivers and families who want to improve their family or relationships with one another.
* Family problems * Behavioural difficulties * Relationship issues * Blended and step family relationships * Child and adolescent counselling and therapy
Family Violence Services - ChangeAbility offers group and individual programmes to help those affected by family violence. If you're ready to make changes in your life, you can talk to us. Abusive and violent relationships can include verbal, emotional, physical or sexual abuse (including making threats, name-calling, controlling who you see, put downs, hitting, imposing and unwanted sexual contact). Our 'Women: Living Free' programme provides support, skills and practical information to help women break free from the cycle of violence. This programme helps women address their own issues of anger, abuse or violence that they may be facing in their lives. For some women, this anger may be related to having experienced abuse in their own lives. For others, the pressure of everyday life (money, parenting, etc) may have become too much. Our Family and Whanau social workers are on hand to help and support families who have been or are currently affected by family violence. If you're ready to make changes in your life, you can talk to us. It's free. It's confidential. And it might be the best thing you'll ever do.

One quick last question. Who was seeking counseling today?
Do you know the reason they are not accepting clients?
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
