We provide a parenting programme, which helps keep families together by giving parents skills in safe, effective and nurturing parenting. It is a residential programme which runs 24/7, 365 days a year and typically families stay for two months, although there is no time limit. Very often we work with families where out of home placements are being considered for the children. Through a collaboration with Battered Women's Trust, we also offer a targeted intervention to support parents re-engaging with parenting and attachment through a residential or community-based programme. Research shows children are better off in the care of their parents; Home & Family is committed to keeping children in the care of their parents wherever possible. We also offer counselling for all ages, but specialise in work with children, offering play therapy for children as young as three. 57% of our referrals are for children and youth, with abuse and family violence being our most common referral reason. Most of our clients come from lower socio-economic backgrounds and would not be able to afford counselling elsewhere and our most frequent referral reason across all age groups is abuse and/or family violence.

Counselling for children - We offer Child Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) for children as young as three. It is our belief that it is not what children do, but why they do it that is crucial to understanding them, relating effectively with them and, where required, intervening successfully with them.
Parenting - The Home & Family parenting service supports parents to develop healthy, secure relationships with their children. Research confirms that children are better off in the care of their own family. Home & Family is committed to keeping children with their families, while providing parents with the tools to parent successfully.
Fees and Payment
Home & Family fees are $135 for a one-hour session. However, as we are a charitable trust, we aim to provide an affordable counselling service. We are able to subsidise 20 sessions for children and youth, and 15 for adults. The amount you will pay will be confirmed by the Bookings Manager at the time of booking your first session. We are also able to assist those who receive a disability allowance for counselling or who have been referred by Right Service Right Time. The subsidy we provide per session applies to clients whose household income is less than $80,000 (annual gross household income). This is also a registered charity.

One quick last question. Who was seeking counseling today?
Do you know the reason they are not accepting clients?
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
