Seniors Services * Care Management - Care Management is the program within our department that acts as a link between Lower Mainland seniors and relatives who live in or out-of-town. Staff members monitor seniors through telephone conversations, home visits and office visits. We also liaise with family, arrange assessments, discuss housing options and provide individual and family counselling and support. Concerned families can get professional assistance from a team of health care professionals at JFS.

We are dedicated to helping our aging clients with their unique needs in living independently to the best of their ability for as long as possible. We treat each individual with respect and dignity. If we cannot meet a client's needs, information and advocacy are provided and referrals are made to other agencies that are better equipped to do so.
Counselling and Wellness
* Therapy - For over 50 years, we have been proud to offer counselling/therapy services on a sliding scale for the Jewish and broader community. Many of our clients report success in resolving concerns such as anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties.
* Mental Health Outreach - JFS's Mental Health Outreach Program provides mental health assessments, cognitive behaviour therapy, advocacy, reintegration programs, and accompaniment to social activities for those individuals living with persistent mental health concerns. Our mental health therapist provides outreach counselling services to members of the Jewish community in the Greater Vancouver region.
* Youth and Families at Risk - In Vancouver's Jewish community, Jewish youth are reportedly at risk for various forms of behaviour, such as alcohol and drug misuse, unsafe sexual practices, unplanned pregnancy, violence, bullying, eating disorders, depression and anxiety.
JFS provides a unique program called YOU Matter that focuses on identifying and preventing these at-risk behaviours.
Over the last 5 years, our Youth at Risk Program has had a four-pronged approach, focusing on: > Counselling - meeting with youth on the street, at home or in school as well as offering and/or providing in-office meetings at JFS; > Education - e.g. training on how to deal with bullying; > Providing outreach, collaborating with other professionals and/or organizations; > Developing specialized programs at schools, such as workshops on "Youth and Depression" and "Development of Positive image".
* Low Cost Counselling Service - Clients are seen by the Clinical Director for the intake process. This meeting will determine the goals of therapy. Clients are seen for up to 15 sessions. If this amount is insufficient to resolve the expressed concerns, further sessions will be provided.
Professional therapy with registered clinical counsellors may address a range of concerns including: > Depression > Anxiety > Loss > Bereavement > Relationship or Family Issues > Personal Growth and Wellness > Trauma > Stress

If You Call, Please Let Us Know How it Went:
Were You Able to Make an Appointment?
One quick last question. Who was seeking counseling today?
Do you know the reason they are not accepting clients?
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
