Tri-City Transitions Society, founded in 1975, is a respected and established registered charity providing emergency shelter and social support for women and children fleeing family violence and abuse in the Tri-City communities of Port Moody, Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam, Anmore and Belcarra. We rely on charitable donations from the community to continue our critical work.
In partnership with leaders in the field of family violence, Tri-City Transitions has developed a unique response to support those victimized by family / domestic violence. and, offers women and children a safe, secure place to rest, rejuvenate, and rebuild their lives. Each year we serve over 1500 women, children and men. Tri-City Transitions has proven to be a resilient organization with the ability to meet and adapt to challenges and evolve to reflect community needs. We have successfully implemented sustainable business practices and seek opportunities to address program and service needs and build both program and staff capacity.

Services Offered
Services for Children and Youth * The PEACE (Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling and Empowerment) Program - The PEACE (Prevention, Education, Advocacy, Counselling and Empowerment) Program provides supportive psycho-educational programming to program participants. Services are provided to children between the ages of 3 and 9, and youth between the ages of 10 and 18 and their families/caregivers who have experienced violence. It is important to understand that children and youth experiences include "experiencing, resisting, responding to, being exposed to, living with, and being affected by violence." Through support, education and group and individual counselling children and youth have the opportunity to heal the emotional wounds of family and or gender-based violence, build self-esteem and stop the inter-generational cycle of abuse.
* Lion Tamers: Anger Management For Children ages 7-9 - Art counselling group for children who have witnessed physical, emotional or verbal abuse and need support learning healthy ways to express their anger.
* Lion Tamers: An Art and Psychoeducational Group for Boys ages 9-12) who have witnessed Abuse - This is a free art and psycho-educational group for boys ages 9-12 who have witnessed physical, emotional, or verbal abuse, live in the Tri-Cities area, and need support learning healthy ways to express their anger. In this 8-week group, boys will learn: how to identify and express feelings; how to express and control anger; how to problem solve and resolve conflict; different types of abuse and ways to stay safe; skills to increase confidence and self-esteem.
Services for Adults * Stopping the Violence Individual Counselling - Our women's counselling program is for women who have experienced violence or abuse, current or past, from family members, partners, spouses or strangers.
* HEAL (Horses Empowering Authentic Living) Program - The HEAL (Horses Empowering Authentic Living) Program is making a difference for many ladies, and we are honoured to be a part of this healing organization. The difference these horses make in the lives of the women that meet them is amazing.
* Finding Her Voice - Finding Her Voice is a program designed by Tri- City Transitions specifically for women. In this program, women are guided to develop self- resiliency to move forward and heal by expressing themselves through music, dance and journalling.
* Healthy Relationships Group - Learn more about yourself and the relationships in your life. Topics will cover understanding the impacts of abuse, communication skills, conflict resolution skills, self-esteem, boundaries, stress management skills, developing relationships with yourself and others, and understanding your relationship patterns.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
