Since 1971 Langley Community Services Society has been helping individuals enhance their lives. Through counselling, education, and the provision of information and resources, LCSS assists nearly 2,000 individuals, couples, and families on a yearly basis. LCSS offers a wide variety of programs in the areas of family counselling, family services, settlement and integration and substance use services.
We are funded by both the Government of British Columbia and the Government of Canada, in addition to support from foundations, local business and individuals.
Services Offered
Family Counselling * Community Counselling - Free counselling for Langley residents with children 14 and under. The focus may be any issue where the improvement in family life will positively affect children. This includes couples, family conflict, divorce, life transitions, stress management or grief and loss.
* Family Success Program - The Family Success Program offers family therapy to families struggling with child protection concerns or family functioning challenges. We also offer family therapy to families that are at high risk of experiencing a decline in family functioning.
* Family Connections - The Family Connections Program provides in-home counselling, support, and advocacy to families with a focus on reducing risk factors and keeping children safe. The families' complex needs are addressed effectively by interventions based on preferences, strengths, and what works for the family.
* Parent Outreach - Parent Outreach offers FREE confidential in-home or onsite support, education and counselling. We work together with families of children up to age 14 years to develop a parenting plan through education, learning resources, community resources and referral information.
Substance Use Services As an outpatient service, the Langley Community Services Substance Use Program provides information, education, counselling and referrals for persons attempting to create change regarding their personal substance use problems. The service is also available for people who are affected by someone else's substance use problem. Treatment includes individual and group work, as well as aftercare support. A harm reduction approach (which could include abstinence) is used, tailoring treatment to the needs and goals of each client.
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
