Northumberland Community Counselling Centre provides or facilitates counselling, information/education, support and/or advocacy programs and services to residents of Northumberland County, to assist and support individuals, couples, families, workplaces and communities to increase their coping capacity and well-being when dealing with life issues.
Services Offered
Children Children can receive individual counselling to help them with emotions and behaviours that are causing problems at school or within the family. Support for children in families where parents are separating or divorcing is also available. Counsellors use child friendly approaches that may include art, music and puppet therapeutic techniques to help the children work through their feelings and thoughts.
Youth Youth Individual counselling is available to youth to address any of the stressors that youth face such as bullying, intimate relationships, gender identity, anger and depression.
The referral of clients to On-TRAC recognizes the need for counselling and support in some young people who may have mental health issues. Particularly, the program is designed to address the needs of children and youth who are at risk of perpetrating or being a victim of violence, who have difficulties with impulse control, and/or who suffer from anxiety and/or depression.
Women Women can receive one to one counselling to help them address issues that come from: Mild to moderate mental health including depression, anxiety, phobias, self harm, substance misuse; * Family problems including separation, relationship breakdowns, children and teens from biological and blended families, * Emotional issues arising from childhood bullying, abuse and instability while growing up * Emotional issues arising from current stressful situations such as job loss, problems with workmates or other adults in their lives * Grief - from losing important people and things in their lives
* Violence Against Women Program - Women and people who identify as women can receive individual supportive counselling and therapy to address the damage resulting from physical, emotional, psychological, financial, and/or sexual violence. Counsellors are well versed in and recognize both same sex and different sex violence and issues.
Men Men can receive one to one counselling to help them address issues that come from: * Mild to moderate mental health including depression, anxiety, phobias, self-harm, * Substance misuse * Family problems including separation, relationship breakdowns, children and teens from biological and blended families * Emotional issues arising from childhood bullying, abuse and instability while growing up * Emotional issues arising from current stressful situations such as job loss, problems with workmates or other adults in their lives * Grief - from losing important people and things in their lives * Violence against men
* Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse -Specialized counselling is provided to boys and men who have experienced sexualized abuse at any time in their lives. Counselling is individual with an added option to join a group of other men who have been through similar experiences.
Families Families can receive support and counselling to help them navigate the many stressors that can arise including the use of the TRIPLE P program to bring about positive changes.
Seniors Counselling can be BRIEF and SOLUTION FOCUSSED which normally results in 3 or 4 sessions that are thorough and to the point in finding some relief and solutions to the situations. If the situation requires more time, up to 10 sessions are provided. In some cases counselling for a longer time period may be possible.

Most services are free. Seniors services fees are geared to income for this service, ranging from $0 to $100 depending on income.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
