Nelson Youth Centres is an accredited children's mental health centre for children and youth ages 6 to 18 in Halton. The centre provides services in Burlingron, Oakvill, Milton and Halton Hills.
Our programs target children and youth who are struggling with mental health and behavioral challenges and their families.
Nelson Youth Centres, using individual, family and group therapies, support the emotional, social and behavioral well being of children, youth and families while strengthening families in our community.

Moving on Mental Health Moving on Mental Health is an important part of Ontario's Mental Health and Addictions Strategy. The plan ensures children, youth, and families are able to get mental health services in their communities that are accessible, responsive, and meet their meets. To ensure children, youth, and families across the province have access to the same core services, lead agencies have been identified in 33 communities across the province.
Nelson Youth Centre is core service provider for the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) Moving on Mental Health plan.
The After School Treatment Program The After School Treatment Program provides group therapy to children/youth between the ages of 6 and 13, experiencing social/emotional difficulties at home, school, and/or in the community.
Reconnecting Youth The Reconnecting Youth Program is a community-based program that provides services for youth between the ages of 12-18 years who are struggling with social/emotional challenges including: trauma, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, which impact their relationships; academic performance and social connections. The program provides individual and family therapy; youth mentorship; and trusteeship for youth ages 16 to 17 on Ontario Works.
Half Day Intensive Program The Half Day Intensive Program is a group therapy program for children/youth between the ages of 7 and 13 who are experiencing significant emotional, social or behavioral needs that are impacting the school setting and that may put them at risk of losing their school placement. The program works in partnership with the family and the school.
Family Support Program The Family Support Program is designed to provide support to parents/caregivers in partnership with the After School Treatment Program and the Half Day Intensive Program. The Family Support Program's engages families in their children/youth's mental health. Parents/caregivers as the primary care takers are an essential part of a child's physical, mental, emotional and spiritual development.
The Family Support Program incorporates five components including: * Instructional support which includes sharing the strategies and skills that their children are being taught and how to adapt them to be used at home or in school. * Informational Support which includes information about mental health, intervention options and child development * Advocacy Support which empowers parents by providing information about parent rights, community resources and training in the area of assertiveness, communication, goal setting and record keeping which can help parents advocate for their children. * Emotional support which provides opportunities for parents to discuss issues, and share their experiences and insight in a group format. * Instrumental Support which incorporates the broader community network by linking families to concrete community based resources.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
