Child and Adolescent Behavior Problems - It is expected that children and adolescents will, at some point, have behaviors that are defiant, challenging and problematic. This often is a normal part of growing up. Children and adolescents will test the limits of "permissibility." They will challenge authority. They will test life and see what the "real" consequences of behavior are. Yet, there are times when child and adolescent behavior truly gets out of hand, unmanageable, and even dangerous.
Behavior Disorders - Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, and Conduct Disorder are three "diagnoses" that children with significant behavioral problems are given. When thinking of behavioral problems, these three are best seen as a continuum from "problem behavior" to "dangerous/criminal behavior." Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, often includes impulsivity, which usually shows up as problem behavior either at home, at school or both. ADHD usually responds well to stimulant medications. However, a combination of medications and therapy is often more effective. Children and adolescents suffering from ADHD can learn to monitor and control behavior through Behavior Modification and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy techniques.
Traumatic Experiences - Sometimes, children and adolescents have behavior problems that are more related to experiences of trauma rather than a behavior disorder such as those discussed above. Indeed, children and adolescents who have been victims of abuse, neglect, sexual abuse and repeated removal from their home are at increased risk for developing behavior problems.
Depression - Feeling sad occasionally is a normal part of life. We all have our "bad days." Everyday events sometimes leave us feeling a little "blue." There are other times when the feelings of sadness just don't go away. It can be debilitating. Depression is more than occasional sadness and affects many areas of a person's life.
Substance Abuse - Some people can use alcohol and even other drugs in a recreational way and not have substantial negative consequences. For many others, the use of alcohol and drugs becomes a devastating and debilitating problem that is very difficult to handle.
Family and Marital Problems - It is safe to say that problems arise in all relationships. Family relationships are no exception. Many family problems are resolved immediately; some require a little more time. Still, there are times when family and marital relationships get stuck into negative and destructive relationship patterns. Anyone who has a condition that interferes with his or her life and the lives of family members may benefit from family therapy. Usually, the better the family functions, the lower the stress level for the person with the health problem. Family therapy has been used successfully to treat many different types of families in many different situations.

Were You Able to Make an Appointment?
One quick last question. Who was seeking counseling today?
Do you know the reason they are not accepting clients?
A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
