Hello, my name is Dan O'Neill. I am a Licensed Mental Health Practitioner (LMHP) in the state of Nebraska. I have earned a B.A. in Psychology, a M.S. in Mental Health Counseling. My career history began in medical supply sales, then into orthopedic sales. A series of life events and opportunities allowed me to return to school at a later age than most to obtain my credentials. As I look back I can see that my life has always been grounded in professions focused on helping others. Whether that be in providing for their physical needs, or now, helping someone find solutions with their emotional or psychological needs. In my counseling career I have worked in residential and outpatient settings. This has allowed me to work with a wide range of populations, from troubled adolescents to those in the criminal justice system. I recently worked for nine years in the Drug Court. I have had the phenomenal opportunity to work with individuals from all walks of life. As one might imagine, working in the criminal justice system exposes you to people with horrendous backgrounds and traumatic experiences, co-morbid mental health issues, and deep-seated addiction issues. It was a challenging yet very rewarding experience.
My approach to counseling is to allow you to determine your needs. You know you better than anyone else, the best way to utilize that knowledge is to meet you where you are and not force you into someone else's idea of the best you. That is not to say I will not challenge your thoughts, actions, decisions-but it will be done in a very considerate and thoughtful manner. I would describe my approach as warm and empathetic, with a touch of humor when appropriate. We will work collaboratively to discover strategies and solutions that work best for you. I know in my own life that tragedy, trauma, family and life issues can be debilitating at times. Having someone you feel will understand, may have had similar experiences, can be truly trusted, and has your best interest in mind can be life changing. I would like to help you navigate whatever you are dealing with.
I look forward to working with you.

Best experience with a therapist I’ve ever had

I was lucky to get paired with Dan. He is an incredible therapist who can help you through the most difficult moments of your life and come out stronger.

Dan is amazing! He listens and then addresses each concern. I’m so glad I was matched with him!

Very very great guy and an excellent therapist!!

He's an awesome person to talk to! He always seems very understanding, and encourages speaking through my thoughts when I get too confused about how to phrase things.

Best therapist I have had on here by far. He is great!

dan is a fantastic therapist. i really appreciate that he is able to offer levity at the right moments without ever losing sight of kindness and focus!

It’s hard in my opinion to find a good therapist. I have been so grateful to have had Daniel referred to me by a friend. I would recommend him for therapy, hands down one of the best!

Like honestly, I can't imagine a better therapist than I have. He knows when I make jokes and laughs at them honestly (and I can tell a fake laugh). He gets where I'm trying to go sometimes better than I do and he is very encouraging. I do not want to trade.

Old school cool. Daniel is blunt without being abrasive and can help guide you with his year's of expertise.

Dan, there’s a lot to say about this guy. I never anticipated for someone like him to understand my issues and be able to empathize with them. I recently went through some really rough patches and distanced myself from everyone in my life. Dan wasn’t afraid to help me pick up right where we left off and help in the best way that he could as a therapist.

My therapist is very supportive and compassionate with his knowledge. He has helped me many ways and I'm grateful for this service and my therapist.

I always leave our sessions feeling much more at ease and less stressed than when I entered. I look forward to the weekly sessions knowing how helpful they are and have always been.

Months later and I still use Dan and look forward to all of our sessions. He holds me accountable while also listening to every word I say. He really makes things click in my brain making it easier to understand and accept.

Dan has been a great help to me. More like a colleague than a patient/provider relationship, Dan walks a great line of reframing as well as challenging my perspectives to help me feel better. I would strongly recommend him, however, I hate to fight you for appointment times. Although, Dan has also been quite helpful with my crazy schedule.

Dan made a positive impact in my life in more ways than one. He is experienced and practical which makes our sessions beneficial, but above that he is a friend. Creating time for sessions can seem annoying when you are busy, but I was always looking forward to talking with Dan and I always walked away from our sessions in a great mindset and grateful.

I love him so much! Seriously asks good questions to help me navigate my problems in a super kind creative way. Love him!

Dan does a great job of listening to what a person has to say before he comes into the conversation. There are useful tactics/strategies he share that can be put to use in a daily routine. He is realistic and provides a sense of humor at times.

I enjoy my experience with Daniel! He has helped me tremendously and I appreciate all he has done.

Easy to talk to; insightful, open & honest (calls it as it is); shares resources that he thinks would help; makes himself available by text and responds promptly. I’m thankful for Dan!

Daniel has been extremely helpful, kind, and he really understands my struggles and helps me work through them. He makes me feel seen and heard. I look forward to our sessions!

During the sessions with Dan, I feel like my feelings and problems are heard, validated and understood. With him guiding me, I feel like I will finally be able to work through my past, present and future. I love that he is easy to talk to, is solution oriented and that he has a sense of humor.

Dan really does want to help and I feel confident in telling him my stories.

It’s very comfortable to talk with Dan. He talks about realistic expectations and techniques to work through. Dan helped me manage my anxiety and stresses related to my job. He’s good-hearted and a great listener!

Dan is an amazing counselor! He really listens and always offered good suggestions. He was never complacent and had no problem pushing me to think about things differently. If I didn't move out of state, I would still be working with Dan.

 Jun 03, 2021 by R.E.
He was very nice and could relate to what I’m going through.

 May 19, 2021 by J.O.
Dan is the best backup a person could have for a tough situation. Dan is respectful and resourceful.

 May 17, 2021 by C.O.
Dr. Dan is the most understanding and compassionate counselor I’ve ever had. He asks thoughtful questions that helps him to better understand my concerns and does not come from a place of judgement. He also offers helpful readings and suggestions that can be applied to life outside of our sessions that have been helpful in applying our discussions to real life situations. I would highly recommend him to anyone.

Dan is so happy to get to know me and my situation. On our first session I felt like we connected well and quick because he simply cares to be a helpful human. I’m excited to continue with Dan and excited to take his guidance to help myself.

I never had used a counselor before so it was difficult for me to make that first phone call to ask for help. Although the initial on boarding process felt pretty clinical, once I was assigned to Dan, and we had our first meeting, I felt more at ease. When I contacted BetterHelp, I felt like I was going through a bit of a mid-life crisis - unhappy with my job but too fearful to try something different. Dan helped me to see the variety of options I had and, in effect, gave me permission to test the waters. We’ve probably had 5 sessions over the last several months. Just when I thought a session would be our last, Dan gave me more to think about. Although the frequency of our meetings have decreased, and someday will be the last session, Dan and this counseling experience has been very good for me, my mental health, and has changed how I’m looking at life as I move forward. Thank You Dan!

Daniel is very charismatic and takes everything about your situation into consideration. He also recommended perfect options suited to my issues to help me work through them. It was definitely worth my time to have worked with him.

 Mar 31, 2021 by E.M.
I can honestly say that in just a few weeks with Dan, my life has improved greatly. He really has helped me get to the root of my issues and start taking steps towards getting my life back on track in a steady way.

 Mar 16, 2021 by E.M.
We've only been meeting a few months, but has helped by not only listening, but offering suggestions and resources for education. He's easy to talk to, and finds humor as well as stressors. Would highly recommend!

 Mar 05, 2021 by J.E.
I have been in an out of therapy since I was 12 and always left feeling it was a waste of my time. Dan totally changed my mind about therapy! Not only does Dan truly listen to me but he has given me the tools to work through 30 years of baggage I have been carrying. He is compassionate but straight with me which I truly appreciate. Words can’t express how just how positive this experience is for me. I will be forever grateful.

Daniel has helped me create a space in my head where I can go and feel comfortable and no longer scared of my thoughts. He helped me be more of my own individual. I greatly appreciate him being in my life.

 Feb 25, 2021 by C.H.
Dan has improved my quality of life in many ways. His recommendations and insightful questions always lead me down a path of understanding myself better, which helps me address the issues for which I originally sought counselling. I can't say how thankful I am to him for all he's done. I wish we could hang out someday as friends.

Daniel is great. He lis a great listener and validates my feelings and concerns. He offers great advice and active steps to take towards my mental health goals. He is empathetic and kind and really cares about his clients. I would recommend him to anyone.

Dan is great!! he adjusted to my needs. It's more like talking to a friend with all the knowledge and expertise he needs to give solid advice. I've never not walked away from a conversation with him not feeling better.

Best therapist I've ever had. I was more than pleasantly surprised with the quality of counseling I recieved. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

Daniel was extremely helpful to me. Within a short period of time, he was able to ascertain my issues and provide me with tangible suggestions. Very empathetic!

 Jan 01, 2021 by B.R.
Daniel is friendly and relatable. A calm source of perspective for someone who often lacks it. I look forward to our sessions and he is good at responding to messages during the week.

Dan is great at listening and really understanding what your goals for counseling are. He is able to guide you in a way that is comfortable to you while helping to learn new ways of thinking and coping with issues.

 Dec 15, 2020 by J.A.
I feel incredibly lucky that I was assigned to Dan. I have a feeling that it would take me a few counselors to finally feel comfortable with, but I was able to shoot straight with Dan right away. I think we are a few generations separated but he gives me some solid life expertise. Never at a loss for valuable words. Really happy with the man.

 Dec 13, 2020 by T..
Dan is approachable and easy to talk to. He listens and offers helpful feedback and new perspectives to my situation. I feel he genuinely cares and wants to share his experience and training to help me overcome obstacles.
